From Defect to Design: «Upcycling» Exhibition
From Defect to Design: «Upcycling» Exhibition
How can defective everyday objects be not only repaired but also transformed through design? This question was explored by Master's students at the Liechtenstein School of Architecture in the elective module «Upcycling», which is part of the Built Heritage & Circularity Unit led by Prof. Dr. Daniel Stockhammer. The module was taught by Simon Egger and Pascal Gnädinger.
During the summer semester 2026, each student selected a damaged object and developed an individual concept to improve it both technically and aesthetically. Whether a chair, table, butter churn, badminton racket, bicycle, sled, chessboard or book, every object was carefully analysed, documented and reimagined through a unique repair concept. The course focused on strategies of care, repair and upcycling while encouraging a critical reflection on the use of resources and the value of the existing built and material environment.
The exhibition presents the restored objects alongside the corresponding analysis and design process, offering insight into the students' engagement with sustainability, craftsmanship and the creative potential of extending the lifespan of everyday objects through thoughtful design interventions. It is on display in the foyer of the University of Liechtenstein until 25 August 2026.
