FAIRGENs - Shaping Fair and Viable Intergenerational Policies for the Future
Project Description
How can social security, prosperity, and equal opportunity be guaranteed in the long term, even in an aging society? This is the question addressed by the European research project FAIRGENs. In light of demographic change, shifting family structures, and mounting economic challenges, the project examines how resources, responsibilities, and opportunities can be distributed fairly across generations.
FAIRGENs employs an interdisciplinary approach that integrates economics, the social sciences, and policy research. The focus lies on analyzing financial transfers, care services, and other forms of intergenerational support. The goal is to gain a better understanding of how policy decisions affect different age groups and how policies that are fair to all generations can be designed.
The researchers are developing innovative tools to make intergenerational justice measurable. This includes new indicators and a multidimensional index that accounts for various facets of distributive justice. Using advanced microsimulation models, the project also investigates the long-term impact of policy reforms on different population groups and the potential consequences for social cohesion.
A key feature of FAIRGENs is the active involvement of citizens and societal stakeholders. Through surveys, experiments, and participatory research formats, the project explores how intergenerational justice is perceived and what expectations society has regarding future policy decisions. The insights gained directly inform the development of scientifically grounded policy recommendations.
Furthermore, the "Agora" platform provides a digital space for exchange between the scientific community, policymakers, and society at large. It fosters dialogue on critical future issues and supports the collaborative development of solutions for a fair and sustainable distribution of opportunities and resources across generations. Initial findings and policy recommendations are made widely accessible via the platform and discussed with relevant stakeholders.
Contribution of our university
