Why do some scientific findings transform society while others remain ignored?
This course explores how scientific evidence is translated into policy and action in complex societal systems. Drawing primarily on real-world examples from public health and policy, the course encourages students to critically reflect on and apply the concepts to challenges within their own disciplines, including economics, business, architecture, sustainability, and technology. Throughout the course, students will explore the interaction between science, policy, and society and examine how scientific evidence is translated into policy and action.
Students will also explore how scientific knowledge interacts with stakeholder interests, public communication, equity, and decision-making processes. Through interdisciplinary case studies and practical exercises, participants will learn how to analyze complex challenges, develop evidence-informed policy recommendations, and communicate effectively with decision-makers and the public.
The course concludes with a policy challenge project in which students design an evidence-informed strategy for addressing a real-world problem.
The course will include a guided visit to the Parliament of Liechtenstein, offering students first-hand insights into legislative processes and the institutional context in which evidence-informed policy decisions are debated and made. Participation in the visit is free of charge for students.
