Alpine Towers

Wood plays a central role in Alpine building culture and especially in the Rhine Valley region. Alongside stone, wood has been the obvious, readily available and renewable building material for rural structures for centuries. This has stood the test of time to this day, even though the techniques of processing have changed drastically. Wood is therefore the ideal material for the construction of an observation tower in the forest. Our project brief was to design a 35-meter-high structure in the Schaan forest that would allow visitors to look out over the treetops into the Liechtenstein and Swiss Rhine Valley. The precise insertion into the topography and the careful connection to the existing paths were intended to integrate the tower into the existing surroundings. The use of locally grown timber was a prerequisite.
