Urban Design & Spatial Development
←
The "Urban Design and Spatial Development" unit conducts research and teaching on a wide range of spatial design and planning matters. We analyse, plan and design spatial development concepts, neighbourhoods, ensembles, public open spaces and landscapes at both national and international level. Our work is based on the principles of decarbonisation, adaptation to climate change, the promotion of biodiversity and an inclusive and equitable distribution of space.
In collaboration with experts from neighbouring disciplines such as landscape architecture, mobility and social space planning, we develop holistic concepts to promote sustainable urban and rural structures. Our transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching enables us to take a holistic view of topics, develop future-oriented ideas and use design as a key to spatial discourse.

Teaching
We teach students spatial knowledge and design skills that go beyond the scale of individual buildings. In addition to teaching well-founded fundamentals, it is important to us to develop contemporary methods and tools that can be used in design. We actively incorporate the content of our research projects and experience from planning practice into our teaching. Where possible, students' work can also be incorporated into our research. The knowledge gained from the synergy of research and teaching should help to initiate and manage complex developments in urban space in a forward-looking way.

Research
Our research focuses on various thematic priorities: inner urban development with a focus on high architectural quality, city and mobility, adaptation of settlement structures to climate change, impacts of planning and construction activities on energy consumption and biodiversity, spatial dimensions of social justice and the continuous advancement of instruments and tools in urban and spatial development.
Transfer
We see ourselves as a regional platform for the exchange of research and practice regarding topics in urban planning and spatial development.
Through the transfer of our academic research into practice, we aim to contribute to societal, ecological, economic and spatial innovation in Liechtenstein and its surroundings.
With personal contacts in science and research, we have timely and efficient access to a network of relationships, which we also share for projects with partners from practice, politics and society.
