Abstract
Technology-oriented companies use technology management activities to achieve a competitive advantage. The understanding of technology management in practice is very diverse which is obvious in different activities, techniques, process outputs and roles. There are multiple impact factors influencing the configuration of technology management. The first step for a systematic configuration of the method elements of technology management is not focusing on the company’s structure-specific characteristics or market as well as industry-specific ones. The attention rather has to be turned to the company’s specific archetype in determining the role of technology competency within the business model and the inherent depth of technological value added. As a result, a company relates to one of the four archetypes: technology specialist, technology strategist, technology integrator, process optimizer. Based on this categorization of technology- oriented companies, the authors suggest a basic configuration of the method elements of technology management.
