22 students of the Master’s degree programme in Banking and Financial Management at the University of Liechtenstein recently took part in a 12 days educational journey to China. They visited numerous financial services institutions, as well as manufacturing companies in Beijing and Shanghai.
Every other year the study directors of this Master’s degree programme organise an educational trip to the world’s most important financial centres. Interested students and alumni can participate at their own cost. As a preparation for the actual visits, students prepare a seminar paper on a related topic prior to the trip, and get this module credited to their overall study performance.
Chinese Wall
This year’s educational journey took the group of students to China, with the official programme of company visits taking place from 8 to 10 April in Beijing and from 13 to 17 April in Shanghai. In addition the students visited major places of interest. The group covered the distance between the two major cities, which are approximately 1500 km apart, by travelling on the bullet train.
A varied schedule of business visits and lectures
The official programme included a visit to the Liechtenstein company Neutrik, which has a production site in Ningbo, near Shanghai. As well as numerous western institutions, such as UBS, Commerzbank, Raiffeisenbank International AG Beijing, AXA and BASF, the group also visited native Chinese companies like the Minsheng Bank.

At three universities in Beijing and Shanghai – the University of International Business and Economics, Central University of Finance and Economics and Tongji University School of Economics and Management – the students from Liechtenstein had the opportunity of attending lectures by Chinese professors, followed by a round of discussion with Chinese students. Professor Menichetti of the University of Liechtenstein also gave lectures at all three universities. Finally, the group was invited to a lecture on the current situation of Swiss financial service providers in China at the Swiss Embassy in Beijing.
