In this research stream, members of the Institute of Information Systems investigate how information technology can help reduce human impact on the natural environment and increase social well-being. Understanding the action possibilities provided by existent and new digital technologies is imperative to designing and implementing more sustainable practices at individual, organisational, and societal levels, and is thus of high relevance to the region. To harness the transformative power of information technology for sustainable development, we not only develop novel theory that explains how specifically information technologies impact on sustainability, but also prescriptions that can directly be applied in practice. We incorporate sustainability-related topics into our teaching, in particular in our Master’s degree programme in "Information Systems." Besides, the Competence Center on “Green IT” seeks to transfer cutting-edge research into practice in the region and beyond.
