Cities and places can be built for sufficiency, the lifestyles of the future and a stable economy. Good built form and community spaces can increase resilience and reduce our environmental footprint by engendering deep quality and meaning in the styles of our lives. Settlements, buildings and landscapes can influence resource use by guiding choices about resource consumption. The design of St. Gallen and five of its most important and dynamic areas will test our hypothesis, as part of our International Building Exposition IBA Bodensee. We will explore a range of urban design strategies for autonomous communities as prototypes for self-sufficient life in this ancient and fast growing city, surrounding communities, and the greater Lake Constance region. This studio is focused on people and their lives: we work through serious collaboration and playfulness in design. We will deploy ancient urban design methods such as geomancy and fengshui, and understand current design dilemmas by exploring the principles of contemporary urban divination in SImCity®.
