From 21 to 25 October 2013, the SAP TechEd offers more than 1,000 hours of SAP technology training for, among other aspects, in-memory computing and enterprise mobility as well as hands-on workshops and Q&A sessions. Together with participants from across the globe, the delegation from Liechtenstein – students from the Master’s degree programme in IT and Business Process Management, accompanied by Stefan Debortoli and Dr. Bernd Schenk – used the opportunity to network with up-and-coming IT professionals from the SAP community.
Winners of the SAP InnoJam
At the beginning of the conference, the winning team was first given the chance to prove their mettle at the pre-TechEd SAP InnoJam. The task presented to the eight teams made up of 150 international participants was to develop an innovative application for one of four challenges with the titles “Crowd tracking”, “Real time betting”, “What rules applies here?” and “Kids love math”. The groups worked around the clock for 36 hours to give a six-minute presentation of their proposed solutions at the end.
Adela Calin, student of the Master’s degree programme in IT and Business Process Management at the University of Liechtenstein, was awarded first place in the pre-TechEd SAP InnoJam along with her group. She and six other students from across the globe won over the jury in the presentation with their project “Less worries more place” about the potential of crowdsourcing for an improved sports experience.

Presentation in front of 10,000 attendees
The first-place prize was the chance for the students to present their InnoJam solution to around 10,000 TechEd attendees on Tuesday evening. “I see this as a big chance to gain some initial experience at international conferences, meet interesting people, get access to the latest products and, of course, to enjoy myself,” commented Adela Calin. Having already won the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum’s “Du bisch dra” contest, this is the Romanian’s second taste of victory in a competition in which current technological knowledge is coupled with creativity, while also considering the potential for creating a benefit for the user.

Endurance rewarded
Berat Menlinkli and Alexandru Moldovan, students of the University of Liechtenstein, were also awarded a prize – not for their project, but for their endurance. Their team won the “Best team staying overnight” prize.

Hilti practical project as the starting point
The chosen students came out on top in a competition within the scope of a practical project at the University of Liechtenstein, which was organized on the initiative of Hilti AG. The practical projects in the Master’s degree programme in IT and Business Process Management take place every semester, often in cooperation with regional companies. In the 2013 summer semester, the students were commissioned by Hilti AG to develop prototypes for smartphone applications which enable communication with Hilti products.
“The invitation and the outstanding performance of our students at the SAP TechEd is a clear recognition of the high quality of the Information Systems courses at the University of Liechtenstein,” commented Professor Jan vom Brocke, Head and Chair of the Institute of Information Systems, proudly.
