The Institute of Architecture and Planning at the University of Liechtenstein has been commissioned by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Justice and Culture to organise Liechtenstein's participation at the Architecture Biennales in 2018, 2020 and 2022. To this end, a university-wide ideas competition was held. The international specialist jury consisting of Janine Köpfli (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Culture), Elisabeth Stöckler (Liechtenstein Cultural Foundation), Jeannette Risch (University of Liechtenstein), Sandi Paucic (Pro Helvetia), Peter Dehoff (Zumtobel Group), Dieter Jüngling (University of Liechtenstein) and Peter Staub (University of Liechtenstein, Chair) has selected the project “The Line” by Luis Hilti and Matilde Igual Capdevila from the ten works submitted.
Providing accessibility for remote places
Luis Hilti, who teaches “Analog Design” at the University of Liechtenstein, is excited about the challenge ahead: “We believe that the study of the ‘conquest’ and transformation of Liechtenstein’s various landscapes will reveal a great deal about the country. We want to work on this topic to make it just as interesting for the people living here as it is for those who have never set foot in the Alps.”
“The Line” deals with the question of how making isolated places in Liechtenstein accessible has an impact on architecture and landscape. Using a cross-section through the country, various locations are examined in detail. The jury especially praised the relevance of the proposed project in relation to the topic of the 2018 Biennale “Freespace”. It was also emphasised that the interventions planned for the project will provide sustainable added value for Liechtenstein.

Exhibitions in Venice and Liechtenstein
The work will be implemented in the coming months both as a research project and by students from the University of Liechtenstein. The results will be presented and exhibited on the opening weekend of the Architecture Biennale (26 and 27 May 2018) in the Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi of the project partner Pro Helvetia and will then also be presented in Liechtenstein.
