The Hilti Corporation has reached agreement with the University of Liechtenstein on extending the Hilti Chair of Business Process Management until 2015. The Hilti Fellowship Program, unique in Europe, will also be extended.
The Hilti Chair of Business Process Management was established in 2007 to develop a closer practical relationship between science and commerce. This goal was more than achieved over the last five years, according to Klaus Risch, head of Global Human Resources at Hilti: “The Hilti Chair has developed nicely and become established both nationally and internationally thanks to the efforts of chair holder Dr. Jan vom Brocke and his team. This can be seen in numerous projects for domestic and international companies as well as through the substantial international research network that has been established with various partners and institutions. I am convinced that our commitment is quite worthy in all aspects, for the students as well as the university and the economy.”
By renewing the agreement with the University of Liechtenstein Hilti aims to ensure that there is a solid ongoing foundation to aid additional research and training activities. The Hilti Chair has been responsible for training more than 200 students in bachelor’s master’s and doctorate programs and is also responsible for some 150 scientific publications chronicling research results in renowned technical formats. Additionally, more than 30 practical-oriented research projects have been launched while competence centers have been established to accelerate the transfer of knowledge to the economic sphere as part of promoting regional economic development.
“These competence centers represent a combination, from the economic, administration and science areas, that helps to move topics forward which focus on the areas of IT and business process management,” says Jan vom Brocke. He understands the university’s role as a catalyst for practical relevance. “The Chair aims to provide specialized support to the economy and public administration, and to guide innovative projects, throughout the entire Rhine Valley region.”

One initiative of the Hilti Chair is the Fellowship Program that was jointly organized with Hilti and only this week started up again, for the tenth time, with three students. As part of this program, which is unique in Europe, selected master’s students from international universities combine Hilti project team work with a semester of study abroad that focuses on master’s level studies at the University of Liechtenstein in IT and business process management. Some 28 students, from more than ten countries, have taken part in the Fellowship Program, some of whom have turned this into a career opportunity at Hilti.
“The substantial interest in the Fellowship Program shows that the combination of theory and practical experience is very attractive to the students. This has been frequently confirmed by program fellows in their feedback. Both the program and the Hilti Chair are of significant interest to us as an employer as we can recruit well-trained young employees from this talent pool,” explains Martin Petry, head of IT at Hilti.
