This year, hundreds of companies, organizations and universities in Switzerland and Liechtenstein will once again be opening their doors on National Future Day, offering hands-on insight into the world of work. On Thursday, 8 November 2012, the University of Liechtenstein is taking part in the project for the first time with an IT day. From 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., interested girls will receive real-life insights into information technology and information systems. Senior lecturers Dr. Bernd Schenk and Rainer Barthels will explain what skills are sought after in computing careers and will take the participants for an exciting journey through the world of IT.
After a tour of the campus, they will get straight down to work. Depending on personal preference, the girls will either write a computer program (system development) or determine the required functions of a program (system analysis). Subsequently, they will found the virtual company “Lipstick AG”. Using specific work procedures, they will experience that not only in purchasing, but also in sales and in production, complex IT systems are essential for a successful business. The girls will develop their own solutions and build useful applications such as a website. To close, the workshop leaders will give an overview of training routes and career options in the fields of information technology and information systems, as well as of the future employment market.
National Future Day – a success story
In recent years, thousands of girls have taken part in National Future Day, receiving practically focused inspiration for their own plans for the future. Originally created as “National Daughters’ Day” – initiated in 2001 by the Swiss Conference of Gender Equality Delegates as part of the training placement project 16+ – today it is an inter-cantonal cooperation project of the Gender Equality offices of 15 Swiss cantons, as well as the city of Bern and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
Registration for girls from secondary school, as well as for interested school classes, is open at www.nationalerzukunftstag.ch/de/mädchen until 29 October 2012. Lunch in the university’s cafeteria will be provided, as well as snacks and drinks.
