Bachelor's degree programme in Architecture (01.09.2008)Description
- Introduction of materials used in model building (wood, plastic, minerals, cardboard), model building techniques.
- Practical application of materials and model building techniques.
- Creating casts with various materials: master form, casing, plaster support, silicon negative; these components are used to make casts from plaster, polyurethane, polyester and wax. The materials are dyed; cast models are processed further. Tools and electrical equipment is used for further processing.
- Introducing the workshop of the school / using the facilities.
- Introductory course for using a IRION precision saw.
Lecture Goals
The choice of materials used for architectural models is introduced/expanded.
Introducing methods and techniques of employing these materials for building models.
Using materials specifically and efficiently for building models.
Accentuating the character of a model through choosing suited materials.
The course encourages the use of certain materials and techniques within the personal design process in architecture and visual arts. This course provides the technical and material foundation for Visual Arts 3.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course each student should have the ability to demonstrate and/or work with:
- familiarity with using materials, the workshop and its equipment.
- the ability to use materials for model building based on design intentions and use tools and equipment.
- the ability to create the master form, the negative and cast models.
- familiarity with codes of conduct at the workshop and the ability to use workshop equipment in a responsible manner.
- the ability to verbalize their model ideas and to express their ideas by using appropriate terminology.
- the ability to integrate models into the design project.

Admission Requirements
The modules of the Bachelor's program in architecture are structured consecutively (they build on each other).
- It is recommended to take the module Theory I prior to enrolling this course.

Exam Modalities
- Attendance, quality of the work is graded.
- Assignments are to be completed prior to the next course unit.
- A model according to specific criteria has to be prepared for the final course unit. Skills acquired in terms of materials and model building techniques are applied individually for the final project. The project outcome is reviewed and discussed.
Assessment
The course has to be passed with a sufficient grade (minimum grade of 4.0).
The module grade will be determined from the weighted average of the single course grades:
