As I reflect on the first part of my journey from France to the heart of Europe, nestled between Austria and Swiss-Alemannic influences, Liechtenstein emerges as a fascinating blend of cultures, offering a unique perspective on life. The cultural practices here, a harmonious blend of its neighbours, while keepings its own values and defending ferociously their cultural independence, have offered me a window into understanding the subtleties of everyday life in ways I hadn’t fully anticipated.
**The Drive into Diversity**
My journey began in September, with a scenic drive through Switzerland, with a one-night stop at a friend’s apartment in the city of Zurich. The transition from France to Liechtenstein was more than just a change in geography; it was a leap into a cultural tapestry rich with nuances. This tiny principality, small enough to fit into my hometown in France, opened like a storybook of traditions and modernity.
**Breaking Stereotypes: The German Connection**
One of my most cherished experiences has been my interaction with Germans, who, contrary to the cliché of being reserved, were incredibly warm and friendly. This broke down my preconceived notions and reminded me that openness is not just a cultural trait but a human one. Our shared love for hiking brought us together on the Voralpsee trail, in Grabs, Switzerland, next to Liechtenstein where the breathtaking view of a Swiss lake from the summit was a metaphor for the new horizons I was exploring. I also took the time to experience the Voralpsee lake with a water temperature of approximatively 15 degrees (refreshing after a 5-hour hike).
**The Hilti Experience: A Glimpse into Liechtenstein’s Work Culture in a worlds renowned corporation**
My internship at Hilti, started in early October, a major company in Liechtenstein with worldwide influence, has been an eye-opener. The work culture here strikes a remarkable balance between professionalism and flexibility. Hilti's approach is rooted in a deep respect for personal autonomy, fostering an environment where creativity and innovation are not just encouraged but celebrated. This starkly contrasts with the more rigid structure I was used to in France. Here, I found that one's value in the workplace is not just measured by output but also by the ability to think divergently and bring fresh perspectives, I had many opportunities to bring my knowledge early in the internship, and people listened, I really felt encouraged to express my opinions on serious matters (can’t talk about it sorry).
**The Great Outdoors: A Shared Passion**
My passion for skiing and hiking resonated well with the locals. In Liechtenstein, these activities are more than just hobbies; they are a way of life, a thread that weaves through every conversation and social gathering. The pristine mountains and serene trails are not just geographical features but integral to the cultural identity of this country. I can’t wait to ride in the station of Malbun whether it is with my coworker or the friends I made at the dormitory. I took also some time to go back to France and hike with my friends there, in the French alps.
**Culinary Adventures: A Taste of Liechtenstein**
Food, as I learned, is a significant part of Liechtenstein's cultural fabric. The blend of Austrian and Swiss influences creates a unique culinary experience. From trying Käsknöpfle, a traditional cheesy pasta dish, to enjoying a simple yet delicious Rösti in Zurich, or even the famous Wiener Schnitzel every meal was an exploration of flavours and traditions, taking a little shift compared to my culinary traditions in the Provence region where we also experience a lot with potatoes (Gratin Dauphinois) and cheese (Picodon for example).
**Reflections on Time and Togetherness**
Timekeeping and socializing in Liechtenstein also offered a fresh perspective. The punctuality here is exemplary, reflecting a deep-rooted respect for others' time, I was used to the Parisian excuse of the metro having difficulties, here I can feel that the time depends on the road traffic at rush hours, hence the flexibility in coming in and out of work, but I had to be more careful regarding meetings at work, where we can understand why Switzerland culture revolves around watches. Social gatherings, though less frequent than in France, are more intimate and meaningful, emphasizing quality over quantity in my opinion.
**Embracing the New**
This journey has until now been more than just an adaptation to a new culture; it's been a process of self-discovery. The cultural practices in Liechtenstein, from work to leisure, have made me reassess my own values and perspectives. The respect for personal space, the blend of tradition and innovation, and the warmth of the people have enriched my understanding of what it means to be part of a global community.

As I continue to explore this charming country, every day unravels new layers of its cultural fabric. Liechtenstein, with its unique blend of Austrian and Swiss influences, stands as a testament to the beauty of cultural diversity. It's not just a place I'm living in; it's a place that's living within me, shaping my worldview and enriching my life in ways I never imagined.
