12 architecture students from Germany, Switzerland and Austria took part in a design workshop at the University of Liechtenstein dedicated to the Maisäss Montafon project. They spent a whole semester analysing an ‘architecture without architects’, sketching and cataloguing the most important features of the landscape and its buildings. They studied relations between the countryside, agriculture and tourism, and investigated the three levels of settlement: the permanent settlements in the valley, the midway position with the Maisäss Building and the high Alps.

Linking past and future
The students from the studio of Erich Strolz, Cert. Eng., an architect and architectural lecturer at the University of Liechtenstein, considered what existing features could be readapted for their original designs – how new buildings could be integrated and made a part of the landscape in typological, topological and tectonic terms. This resulted in 12 very different projects, each illustrating an individual approach, which will be presented to interested members of the general public for five weeks in an exhibition at the ORF broadcasting house in Dornbirn. The official opening takes place on 18 February 2015 at 6.00 pm. Entry is free.

Cross-border cooperation
The exhibition is a cooperative venture between the Institute of Architecture and Planning of the University of Liechtenstein, the ‘Raumentwicklung Montafon’ [‘Motafon Spatial Development’] project of Stand Montafon [the Montafon Valley Association], Casino Bregenz and the national broadcasting station in Dornbirn, under the auspices of the Kunst im Funkhaus [Art at the Broadcasting Station] scheme.
