On 31 January 2012, the Institute of Architecture and Planning, together with the Principality of Liechtenstein’s government, invites you to a discussion on sustainable town planning and building designs at the University of Liechtenstein in the scope of the Vision 2020 series.
According to Peter Droege, Professor for Sustainable Spatial Development, town planning is a tricky topic: “Many municipalities still only focus on creating plans for zones and developments, instead of seeing town planning as an integral and future-oriented design task. Well-organized town planning, however, pursues strategic and comprehensive objectives – and thus achieves results that increase our quality of life. Through accurate measures, such as the careful design of village centres or peripheral areas, values are protected and potential is released. Thus, the whole community benefits. The additional value can even be measured in financial terms!” At the event entitled “Good town planning – for everyone’s benefit!”, which will be held in the University of Liechtenstein’s auditorium on Tuesday, 31 January 2012, from 6.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., three speakers will be presenting examples for sustainable, but also economically successful, town planning and buildings. All interested parties are welcome.
Current examples of sustainable planning
The first speech of the evening will be given by Sidonie Bilger-Wölpert, an architect and town planner from Munich. She will speak on her extensive consulting activities in the Bavarian municipalities Sulzfeld and Iphofen. Well-organized town planning has significantly increased the quality of life in those regions, which benefits both the citizens and the local economy. Conradin Clavuot, visiting professor at the Institute of Architecture and Planning, will speak on the successful development of communal areas, based on the example of the station in Chur, which, last year, was awarded at the 11th international Brunel Award Ceremony for its outstanding railway design and architecture. Under Conradin Clavuot’s guidance, the station and the surrounding area were shaped into a new landmark of Graubünden’s capital. This way, the station and the surrounding area also strengthen Chur’s position in terms of regional locational competition. Based on examples from Liechtenstein, Jean-Claude Zurflüh, member of the board of directors and executive management at Joseph Wohlwend Treuhand AG, will illustrate how good town planning and principles of sustainable real-estate development add to the economic success of projects.
Opportunity for exchanges with experts
After the speeches, representatives of the LIA (Liechtenstein association of engineers and architects) and the Liechtenstein municipalities will discuss the topic in greater depth with an expert for communal development during a panel discussion. From 7.30 p.m., the audience will be invited to join the discussion with the speakers and the panel, led by Professor Peter Droege. Dr. Renate Müssner, government councillor for the environment and planning, will sum up the event and present a conclusion.
