Description
- Based on the introduction and comparison of various structural materials and systems understanding is developed of the purpose and efficiency of structural materials and systems.
- Historical and contemporary buildings serve as examples for demonstrating the possibilities and limitations of building materials and the potential of structures as space defining elements.
Lecture Goals
Based on the skills acquired in the modules Building Technology I-V and in line with the objectives of the module Building Technology VI the goal of this course is explore the nexus between form, space and structure by evaluating criteria such as purpose, logic, structural honesty etc. of structural systems and materials.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course each student should have the ability to demonstrate and/or work with:
- comparative knowledge of applications and different properties of structural systems and materials.
- critical understanding of historical and contemporary applications of structural systems and materials.
- the ability to employ methods of structural design and formally implement structural analysis concepts appropriate for the materials used.
- the ability to process, cluster and interpret a multitude of specifications and information, and apply them in the context of the design process.
- understanding of the principles of team work to jointly develop design ideas.
- the ability to communicate complex information with varying objectives to various target groups.
- the ability to critically analyze, assess and synthesize ideas, concepts, information and topics relevant to the discipline of architecture.
- the ability to utilize various sources of information to form an opinion.

Admission Requirements
The modules of the Bachelor's program in architecture are structured consecutively (they build on each other).
- Successful completion of the modules Building Technology I, II and III prior to enrollment.
- It is recommended to take the modules Building Technology IV and V prior to enrolling this course.

Assessment
The course has to be passed with a sufficient grade (minimum grade of 4.0).
The module grade will be determined from the weighted average of the single course grades:
