Advanced Studio Craft
This winter semester 2024/25, the Design Studio Craft at the University of Liechtenstein is delving into the transformation of Antwerp's industrial ring. Once the heart of maritime trade and industry, this area-characterized by warehouses, former abattoirs, and shipyards-now stands as a testament to the city's dynamic past and uncertain future.
Guided by Prof. Urs Meister and Dr. Ing. Carmen Rist-Stadelmann, both Bachelor and Master students collaborate to design a multifaceted music culture centre. This project aims to bridge Antwerp's historical and contemporary aspects, connecting the city with its waterways and transforming neglected spaces into vibrant, meaningful places.
As part of their first exercise, students created aural sculptures to explore the relationship between music and space. From October 10 to October 27, 2024, these instruments will be exhibited at the university. In pairs, students selected materials that generate sounds, vibrations, or melodies, and incorporated elements of upcycling in innovative ways. Each team designed a 'RESONATOR'-a one-meter-tall analogue object intended to be played synchronously by two people. The resulting soundscape, lasting around one minute, was performed with a clear dress code and a chosen musical theme, referencing a selected composer.
In October 2024, the studio will also embark on a seminar week in Antwerp under the theme "Antwerp Slow Urbanism." This exploration will focus on the city's approach to urban development, characterized by its careful and context-sensitive planning. Antwerp's transformation reflects a commitment to preserving the historic harbour areas, integrating new structures with existing ones, and fostering organic development. Through "image quality plans" and the guidance of the city architect, Antwerp embodies a "slow urbanism" approach that adapts to changing needs while respecting the city's architectural heritage. This seminar will provide students with valuable insights into how Antwerp is balancing modern demands with its rich historical context.
The final results of the design studio will be presented at the final public presentations on Thursday, 12 December 2024 at the University of Liechtenstein.
