In a new cooperation with the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum, the Institute of Information Systems at the University of Liechtenstein is investigating the use of digital innovations for the museum. In a first joint project called “Du bisch dra!”, all the people of Liechtenstein are invited to design their museum of the future.

The subject of the next exhibition, the special events planned and the use of media in the museum rooms – all these are topics that museums had primarily addressed behind closed doors.

This is something that the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum, whose role is to preserve Liechtenstein culture and promote understanding of the history of Liechtenstein, wants to change. With an ideas competition entitled “Du bisch dra!” starting on 22 February 2013, the museum hopes to encourage visitors and citizens to submit ideas for the design of the LandesMuseum of the future via Facebook.

Attractive prizes
Ideas for special exhibitions, museum apps for smartphones and online exhibitions – there are no limits to the imagination. At the end of the competition, the most creative ideas will be chosen by a specialist jury and, if possible, turned into reality.

Prizes will be awarded in the different categories. The most original idea will win an iPad with Wi-Fi 32GB tablet, and the two most useful ideas will receive a Kindle Paperwhite e-book reader each. The most popular idea of the week (based on the number of “likes”) will win a gift voucher.

Crowdsourcing is a new word created from the words crowd and outsourcing. The idea of outsourcing what were once company-internal tasks such as ideas finding or product design to “anonymous amateurs” is not new, but using it in a museum is. Previously, crowdsourcing has primarily been used in research and development and in the media industry. This is why the LandesMuseum’s project is being supported with know-how from the Hilti Chair at the Institute of Information Systems at the University of Liechtenstein.

Digital innovations for a Museum 2.0

The forthcoming online ideas competition is just one in a series of cooperation projects between the LandesMuseum and the Institute of Information Systems. The projects all relate to the use of new media in the museum. Specific examples include testing augmented reality technologies and the collection of Liechtenstein-related content in social networks. The aim of the cooperation between the museum and the university is to enrich the museum experience by means of digital innovations.

“New media and technologies are playing an increasingly important role in culture and tourism,” explains Dr. Oliver Müller, assistant professor at the Hilti Chair of Business Process Management at the University of Liechtenstein, who is responsible for the implementation of the cooperation project. “As these industries are hugely important to our region, we are trialling the use of digital innovations in conjunction with the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum.”

Professor Rainer Vollkommer, Director of the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum, is very much in favour of the cooperation with the Institute of Information Systems. “Questions as to the right direction and possible added value for museums through new media have been common for a few years, and I am very happy that we can begin to scientifically investigate these aspects for the first time in cooperation with the University of Liechtenstein based on the example of ‘New media at the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum’.”

“The ideas competition is in line with other research activities by the Institute of Information Systems as part of the eSociety Bodensee 2020 research project sponsored by the International Lake Constance University (IBH),” explains Professor Jan vom Brocke, who holds the Hilti Chair of Business Process Management.

Interested parties can take part in the ideas competition from 22 February to 24 March 2013 on the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum’s Facebook page.
