Among the numerous winners of this year’s Vorarlberger Holzbaupreis (timber construction prize) were graduates of, and lecturers at, the University of Liechtenstein. Every two years, the Holzbaupreis provides an overview of developments in the area of timber construction.
The aim of the Holzbaupreis is to promote and reward special achievements in Vorarlberg’s timber construction sector. This year, it was, above all, the lecturer Bernardo Bader and his architectural projects that impressed the jury: he won two awards in the categories "family home" and "public construction", as well as two commendations in the categories "industry building" and "public construction". Two graduates of the University of Liechtenstein, Martin Hackl and Dieter Klammer, from the company architektur.terminal Hackl und Klammer won the award in the category "renovation / extension". Additional awards went to the graduates Jesco Hutter, Gerald Amann and Paul Steurer.
An irresistible magic ...
House by the moor Award: family home
IIn the context of the “nice” housing estate, the last house by the moor, designed by Bernardo Bader, looks more like an unadorned, agricultural, utilitarian building. Yet after taking a single step into this longish, unheated “barn”, the visitor will experience the irresistible magic of this building.
A place in which to linger
Primary school and hall in Laterns Award: public construction
The primary school and hall in Laterns, which have also been designed by Bernardo Bader, comprise two impressive buildings with gable roofs, which conform effortlessly to popular visual clichés concerning “modern architecture”. The courtyard sits between the two gable ends, which stand at right angles to each other. The jury’s comment on this timber construction was utterly unambiguous: “We don’t ever want to leave.”
A stable becomes a house
House in Marul - Award: Renovation/extension
This holiday home by graduates Martin Hackl and Dieter Klammer enjoys a wonderful location. And it is different. When it is uninhabited and locked up, it barely looks any different from a barn. But once the sliding shutters are opened, a little gem is revealed inside. The original single room of this barn is now home to a small sleeping gallery, while the floor-to-ceiling glass partition to the entrance veranda creates a charming interplay of interior and exterior. The building features just the right number of windows, which look out on the magnificent scenery.
